The first time you walk into a Moroccan souk, your senses don't know where to land. Saffron stacked into yellow mountains. Lanterns hammered out by hand in copper-bright corridors. The smell of cumin, leather, mint, charcoal. Calls of come look, come look from every direction at once.
And then the price.
It comes in a number that feels like a puzzle. Ten phrases are about to give you the key. Bargaining in Morocco isn't combat. It's a ritual. A smiling conversation that uses prices as the excuse to have it. Sellers love a traveler who joins in. They'll move the price, crack a joke, sometimes pour you tea. By the end you walk out with Balgha under your arm and a story to take home.
Ten phrases, said softly and in the right order, turn that first encounter into one of the best afternoons of the trip.

Phrasebook souk lists give you fifty shopping words and none of them help. I want, this one, do you have, can I see, what about, more, less, smaller, bigger. All useful. None of them are the thing.
The thing is the dance. A four-step exchange: opener, soft pushback, polite counter, graceful walk-away. The seller knows the steps. You don't. That's the whole problem.
These ten phrases are the steps. Memorize them in order. Say them with a smile, not a frown. The seller will feel you've done this before, and the price will move because of it.
Notice what's not on the list. No cheaper without a please attached. No no, no, no. No phrasebook impressions of toughness. The phrases that work are friendly. The ones that don't are stiff. That's most of what you need to know.

Captain's tip: count to three in your head before every counter-offer. The pause shows you're thinking carefully, not rushing — and sellers respect a calm thinker. Your number lands warmer when you've earned the silence first.

Four hundred dirhams, he says.
You laugh gently. Not at him. With him. Bzaf bzaf, you say. Ghali bzaf. He nods. He was expecting this. He says three hundred fifty, my friend, for you.
You look at the Balgha again. You glance around at the other stalls. You say Yemken men ba3d (maybe later) and start to walk.
Every time, he calls you back. Wait, wait, my friend. Two-fifty. Akher taman. Final price.
You look at him properly now. You hold up two fingers. Two hundred?
He gives the big sigh every Moroccan seller has perfected. He shakes his head. He looks pained. Then quietly: Two hundred. For you.
Ghadi nakhdo, you say. I'll take it.
You both smile. He wraps the Balgha. You both knew the whole time that the price was going to land near two hundred. The four hundred was the first beat of a song you were both going to sing. You walk out with leather slippers in a paper bag. He keeps the story about the foreigner who knows how to bargain. Everybody wins.
Bargaining in Morocco isn't a fight. It's a conversation — the price is just the excuse for it.

Why do prices always start with 4 or 7? Sellers avoid round numbers. 500 sounds final, like a published price tag. 470 sounds personal — like a number he just made up for you, which means it can change for you. The same trick works for you: counter with 180, never 200.
The phrases are the dance. These are the rules that decide how well you dance them.
Lead with a smile. A smile turns a bargain into a conversation, and a conversation always moves the price. Sellers love trading with someone who's enjoying it as much as they are.
Compliment the goods. Sellers take real pride in what they make and sell. Counter the price, never the product. A simple zwina bzaf (very beautiful) earns goodwill and usually a better number. Stay on the price. Stay positive about the thing itself.
The walk-away is part of the dance. If the price has settled and you start to leave, you'll almost always be called back. This isn't a trick. It's the whole social contract. Stepping away politely tells the seller you've reached your real number. He'd rather close at your real number than keep dancing. He has forty other people to greet today.
The third price is real. First price: the dance opener. Second price: the friendly counter. Third price: usually within 5–10% of what he'll happily take. After the third, you're inside his comfortable margin.
Tea changes everything. If a seller offers you mint tea, sit down. Tea means he's serious about doing business with you, and the price after tea is almost always better than the price before it. Accept and you accept a friendship for the rest of the afternoon.
Some bargains will land below your target. Some will land above it. Both are wins.
The thirty dirhams that go a little over your number travel to a craftsman with kids and a roof and forty competing stalls in either direction. They keep a six-hundred-year-old marketplace alive. The point was never the saving. The point is the conversation: a smiling negotiation that happens a hundred times a day in every medina from Tangier to Essaouira.
